Nursery Curriculum
Early Years Foundation Stage
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) has a consistent approach to care and learning from birth to the end of the Foundation Stage.
By means of developmentally appropriate play encounters and experiences and a high level of individual attention, we offer a curriculum which leads to nationally improved learning outcomes and prepares your child to progress with confidence in the National Curriculum at five years.
Thames Tiddlers Nursery is inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach which strengthens and links closely to the Early Years Foundation stage. All our practices and work with children incorporates the EYFS. Educators at Thames Tiddlers Nursery plan daily and weekly in line with children's interests. Our termly planning is produced from our termly analysing of the children's learning and development outcomes in the three prime areas. From this information all staff are involved in the planning process at our termly planning and staff meetings.
Thames Tiddlers Nursery also uses an online tool called Tapestry to document each child's individual learning journeys which all parents can have access to their individual child's learning documents. An individual record of each child’s development is maintained, showing their abilities, progress rate and areas needing further staff assistance.
We cover all the National Curriculum Early Learning Goals which include:-
Personal, social and emotional development
Communication and Language
Physical Development
Mathematics
Literacy
Understanding the world
Expressive arts and design
Ofsted Inspectors will ensure that the quality of education we provide meets the standards. We are also linked and supported by the “Early Years Advisory Team” through visits and training by the Royal borough of Greenwich.
Children who are approaching school age will receive a transitional report from their key person. Parents/Carers will have the opportunity to read and comment on their report. This and their learning profile (EYFS learning and development) will then be sent to their new school.
Much More Offered at Thames Tiddlers Nursery
Yoga and Mindfulness
We have a trained yoga teacher who comes in twice a week to work with the children in groups of 8. These sessions are showing to be hugely beneficial for the children in supporting a time for calm, thoughtfulness and being grounded in the present moment.
Forest School
Forest school supports all children to learn and develop skills such as, risk taking, working collaboratively in peers groups, valuing and nurturing the natural environment, spatial awareness and physical development. Children are encouraged to develop independence skills, improve their decision making and to raise their self- esteem through small achievable tasks. The sessions are child led which accommodate individual learning styles and abilities.
The adult’s role is to observe, assess and to support the children's explorations and discoveries during their time in forest school. The educators risk assesses the outdoor environment on a daily basis and ensure the space is ready for the children use.
Children also take part in forest school walks to the local woodlands area with educators on a weekly basis. This is planned to ensure every child takes part in a 6 week project before they transition to school in the September.
TIC - Together in Communication
Thames Tiddlers Nursery is one of the Hubs for together in communication in the Royal Borough of Greenwich and works closely with other settings, educators and lead Early Years practitioners. At Thames Tiddlers we have a space specifically for TIC and a two year old lead who managers this space alongside planning and working with the two year old children.
Atelier session
These sessions are lead by our atelierista Rachel and other educators in our atelier spaces. The sessions support ongoing projects and enquiries from the children's interests and fascinations. The atelier's are well resourced with rich and good quality art materials. The sessions are documented and you can see the beautiful work throughout the spaces and in formal documentation, sketchbooks and folders.
Growing
Children have the opportunity to grow fruit and vegetables in the garden. They have the responsibility of planting, watering, harvesting and finally they are able to eat the food they have grown. This is a huge part of the child’s learning as it gives them an insight of a life cycle, healthy eating, how to care for something and about change.
Billy Bear
Billy bear is a teddy that spends the weekend at one of the children’s houses and takes part in all of the outdoor activities the child may do with his/her family. For example going to the park, a friend’s house or out for lunch etc. A disposable camera and diary also go home with Billy bear so the children can take photographs and write about their adventures.
